About The Research Study

CAN IMPROVING SLEEP DURING PREGNANCY PREVENT POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION? Previous research shows that sleep disruption during pregnancy can increase the risk of developing postpartum depression. In this study, researchers from Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University will use non-medication techniques to try to improve both mood and sleep in expectant mothers.

Who should join our study?

We are seeking pregnant women ages 18–45 who:

  •  are in their 1st or 2nd trimester AND
  • are having some difficulty sleeping AND
  • are experiencing symptoms of depression

What does the study involve?

The study takes place from 3rd trimester of pregnancy to 18 weeks postpartum. If you meet the initial eligibility criteria (determined by a short phone screen), you will be asked to:

  • Complete an initial orientation meeting between 24–28 weeks of pregnancy to confirm eligibility
  • Attend 6 study visits during and after pregnancy
  • Have your sleep monitored at home with a sleep wristwatch and your biological clock measured with salivary melatonin
  • Meet with a study doctor to receive treatment for your symptoms of anxiety or depression
